Just listening to the very first ever album by Renaissance – by the band that never quite managed to do the second album – despite number one being awesome – and the band had prodigious talent. Still – there you go.

I looked them up on Wikipedia – and found
1) quite an interesting way of presenting the personnel changes
2) that Annie Haslam – pretty much the driver of version 2 of the band still keeps them together
and then buried away – this little fact that i never EVER knew ….
3) Gavin Harrison played drums for Renaissance in 1983 !!!
Gavin Harrison
He won the Modern Drummer magazine readers’ poll for “best progressive drummer of the year” consecutively in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

I wrote an email to a friend this morning who needed an introduction to Porcupine Tree. Thought I would share what I came up with. Be interested to see if there are any additions or modifications to the thinking.

Steven Wilson and kscope have introduced me to a lot of music over the years. So, why not a podcast? This one is worth a listen as it’s accomplished via an introductory (and closing) interview with Steven. Lots of interesting commentary including status of the Insurgentes movie. Also, a couple of nice songs from North Atlantic Oscillation and The Pineapple Thief. Steven describes NAO as a cross between Pink Floyd and Aphex Twin.
IMHO, kscope is providing a critical service to the music industry, focusing on post progressive bands. For everything wrong with the music industry, kscope is something that is very, very right. The podcast can be found here -> kscope monthly podcast

Porcupine Tree will return to North America in April for the second leg of the Incident tour, concentrating on many cities that were not included on the first leg.
Of course, I will make the 3 hour trek to Charlotte. It’s odd there is nothing on the west coast (sorry John) but perhaps that’s where that “mystery festival” appearance comes into play.
Having seen The Incident performed in NYC and Baltimore, I can say I will be walking down a street in Amsterdam or NYC in 20 years, and some cover band will be performing it beginning to end.

Over the years Steven has released what is known as “Cover Version”. To date five have been released (known as CVI, CVII, CVIII, CVIV, CVV). Each Cover Version includes a cover of another artist’s song plus an original Steven Wilson song. The covers have included the likes of Alanis Morisette (Thank You) and The Cure (The Forrest).
CVVI has been been recorded and you can hear the “non-cover” song at Steven’s myspace. http://www.myspace.com/therealstevenwilson

“Death Take Your Fiddle” – 3:14
“I Gotta Fire” – 2:28
“Soul on Fire” – 4:08
“Harmony 2 (Piano)” – 0:43

“Harmony 5 (Accordion)” – 1:04
“Borrowed Your Gun” – 3:48
“Harmony 6 (Glockenspiel)” – 0:51
“Goodnight Goodnight” – 4:38This is the track listing for their Album A and EAccording to Wiki :
…. Jason was hesitant to finish the album, but a meeting with cult film director Harmony Korine inspired him to complete it. He also released a solo experimental record, Guitar Loops, and recorded the soundtrack to Korine’s 2008 film Mister Lonely, with the Sun City Girls. The six Harmony tracks on the album are named after the director.
Not only that – but the track ‘don’t hold me close’ is a duet with Harmony’s wife.
How do i know that – wiki of course. why did i look it up – i didn’t.
However, my friend Russ (American living in UK) posted this to his blog – where of course one Harmony Korine is mentioned.
Odd I thought – that’s the first track of Insurgentes. Wonder if there is a connection. There is. On the HK Wiki page :
“Harmony Korine” is the lead track on the solo album Insurgentes by Porcupine Tree lead singer Steven Wilson.”
But who is this Harmony Korine I ask myself ? Since I hadn’t connected the track to a real person before.
So started reading about him – and that’s where I discovered the really deep connection to Spiritualized.
I guess it is time for me to go see some of his movies.
So – when can I see his next one ? Turns out that his next film, ‘Trash Humpers’, has premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. [Wikipedia]
And so the connections continue – Trash Humping was also a term I did not know until the end of last week (note to self – get out more) – when I was listening to NPR – turns out – well – I’ll let you check it out -
Guess what – according to Wikipedia – Harmony Korine – the Insurgentes track by Wilson was NPR’s song of the day – March 4th 2009 ……
Wheels within Wheels my friends.
Lasse works with The Tree, Blackfield, Opeth and The Pineaplle Thief – all very good in their own way ,,,, the lad obviously has an ear for good music !

The Tree might be going main stream … really ?
Porcupine Tree Fans Snatch Up ‘The Incident’ | Billboard.com
Wilson believes that despite the “dumbing down” of culture by entertainment like reality TV, “there is definitely an equal and kind of opposite reaction against that by people who still want something with a little bit of emotional resonance, emotional depth . . . something they can immerse themselves in and kind of appreciate over many listens.”

Having tried to buy ‘The Incident’ from Virgin – (forgetting that they are of course now defunct – even in America) … I was thinking where do you go to but a CD for INSTANT gratification. Bobby G put me on to Best Buy. I looked them up – and will sail down to my local later today – however their online mall caught my eye …
You might find it a little hard to read – but this is the gist : all their albums to date are classified as Progressive Rock – and lo – just as Mr Wilson in the BBC article declares that finally he is ok to think of his stuff as ‘Progressive’ – Best Buy classifies – what must be the Tree’s most Progressive … as Pop.
