Now there’s an aspect of the Tree that I never new …
Richard Barbieri – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His keyboard-playing role in Porcupine Tree is similarly split with frontman/producer Steven Wilson, with Barbieri processing the sound of other musicians in the band as well as playing more orthodox keyboard parts.

Tampa rocker (that would be ‘the FIFTH Tree Man’) – made both of his dreams come true

Nice human article about the other live guitarist that hangs around the stage when The Tree play live.
Reminded me of these photos from a few years ago – taken in Camden Town, London when he and SW played to around 200 people in a record store.

Just listening to the very first ever album by Renaissance – by the band that never quite managed to do the second album – despite number one being awesome – and the band had prodigious talent. Still – there you go.

I looked them up on Wikipedia – and found
1) quite an interesting way of presenting the personnel changes
2) that Annie Haslam – pretty much the driver of version 2 of the band still keeps them together
and then buried away – this little fact that i never EVER knew ….
3) Gavin Harrison played drums for Renaissance in 1983 !!!
Gavin Harrison
He won the Modern Drummer magazine readers’ poll for “best progressive drummer of the year” consecutively in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

I wrote an email to a friend this morning who needed an introduction to Porcupine Tree. Thought I would share what I came up with. Be interested to see if there are any additions or modifications to the thinking.

I’ve been following these guys for their past few releases. And the new one, Someone Here is Missing, is just around the corner.
A new video from this upcoming release is available today! go here: Nothing At Best
And the album mini site can be accessed here: Someone Here is Missing
I saw Bruce and the band open for Riverside in Amsterdam a few months back. This UK band is poised to deliver a great album that could take them far (at least further than 30 or 40,000 records).
Not to be missed. If you haven’t heard their last two studio records, Tightly Unwound and Little Man, they are excellent. Also, 3000 Days provides a good retrospective on the band (as well as some alternative recordings).

Nosound – reported on them before in this ‘illustrious organ’ and now – another stream is available.
Their web site is here. Forgotten how I discovered this band until I saw the quotes – DUH ….
“This is very good material, and I think you are going in the right direction for sure” … Steven Wilson
“Out of all the Porcupine Tree and No-Man influenced work we’ve received at Burning Shed, Nosound is very probably the best” … Tim Bowness (No-man)
“It’s nearly perfect, either in recording quality and composing abilities, and what is more striking is the care and very elegant style for music details.” … Rocklab
“A fine art rock album.. tangible demonstration that there’s art rather than simply prog.” … Eclipsed
“A Sense Of Loss one of the finest releases of 2009″ … ClassicRock

Anathema announces their first studio album of new material since 2003 (A Natural Disaster-a gem if you haven’t heard it). Mixed by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson, We’re here because we’re here represents the continuing maturation of Anathema as a progressive rock band.

Anathema began their career as a “doom metal” band and have, over the years and through several lineup changes, become a band in the vein of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, and the milder side of Opeth. Strong writing, solid production, and a “leak” of four songs over the past few months promise a strong outing that could take this (relatively) little known band very far.
Digital version is scheduled for release on May 30. You can get a free download of the song Thin Air by joining K-Scope’s mailing list. The album microsite can be found here -> We’re Here Because We’re Here

Kettle Prime’s farewell concerts just keep going ! I saw the one currently promoted on their home page in September ’09. It is now available as a free download – and they are performing again soon on Maui at the same venue.
Worth a trip to Diamond’s if you are on Island.
Live @ Diamonds 9-11-09
