As the man says :

Remember: 13ths are the same as 6ths

and

Rule: As I stated before, without a 7th present, the 13th is considered a 6th.

Kudos to Chris – a really interesting page.

Kim Larsen - Gasolin' - Circa '76

Most readers have likely never heard of C.V. Jørgensen, Bifrost, Gasolin and Kim Larsen – but they and many others from the Danish music scene all contributed to my life of music in the early 70s. This one in particular – I have just played it at least 10 times as I have explored YouTube trying to find the right version to share … music has so many memories ….. the original just seems to me to have the edge over the later version …. enjoy.

Manu Chao

I caught Manu Chao playing Austin City Limits on PBS last night. It was late. I was tired. I didn’t fall asleep. Just GREAT music. And of course – because one of the reasons of reading this blog is to understand just how far behind the music scene I truly am ….  I am appalled to learn that he has been around since the last 80s !!!

Read more about him here

Listen to him on Pandora here

And listen to the concert I saw last night here

Latin meets Punk meets Reggae – with a lead guitar that a lot of bands would be proud of, a horn section, rhythm to keep it going – PASSION.

RIP Malcolm McClaren

Not sure how I missed this news – other than there is simply too much news. Too much. But did you know – The ‘Godfather of Punk’ is dead. Sad. 64 years old. Cancer victim.

NewImage.jpg

Me, never a big fan of the Sex PIstols. Maybe I was too old. No. Actually it was (to my simple mind at least) just not good to listen to. I do know that punk was forged out of a ‘rebellion against the pomp rock stadium bands’ that had become prevalent in the 70s – but to position themselves as ‘the real deal’ – because they ‘told it as it was’ – don’t buy it.

Compare and contrast, some selected lyrics from The Sex PIstols in 1977:

God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She ain’t no human being
There is no future
In England’s dreaming

Don’t be told what you want
Don’t be told what you need
There’s no future, no future,
No future for you

Same Year – 1977 – PInk Floyd : Dogs:

NewImage.jpg

Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away;
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
You better watch out,
There may be dogs about
I’ve looked over Jordan, and I have seen
Things are not what they seem.

What do you get for pretending the danger’s not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is no bad dream.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of karate,
Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we’ll make the bugger’s eyes water.

Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home
And do as you’re told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

The message from both bands was equally anti establishment – its just that you kinda had to spend time with ‘Syd’s Boys’ – but the Pistols – 3 minutes – tops – they were done ! (BTW – NIck Mason produced the Clash’s second album in the very same Pink Floyd owned studio in Islington that they recorded Animals – ironic?)

Anyway – back to Malcolm. Accepting that he obviously had a big hand in the PIstols sound – which wasn’t my fave – I was a BIG Fan of his solo work around the 84 to 94 time slot – specifically …. (I still wonder whether the Pistols songs were so short because .. ok – not going to go there — different story. Meanwhile – do -if you have time – check out :

The Stones and the true story of Exile on Main St Music | The Observer

Good piece from Sean O’Hagan in The Observer …

Photo above depicts ‘The Rolling Stones’, Gram Parsons and Anita Pallenberg at Villa Nellcote, France, 1971. One of a series of evocative shots taken by photographer Dominique Tarle. Photograph: Dominique Tarle Exile on Main Street is being reissued, in deluxe packaging – with 10 new bonus tracks.

The Stones and the true story of Exile on Main St

“Mick needs to know what he’s going to do tomorrow,” says Richards, his voice slurring into a laugh. “Me, I’m just happy to wake up and see who’s hanging around. Mick’s rock, I’m roll.”

Another wonderful quote :

Without a trace of irony, Watts adds, “Keith’s a very bohemian and eccentric person, he really is.”

…. no shit dick tracy ! … and talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous ”

Others experienced more mundane but no less pressing problems. Both Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman missed home and some of their own creature comforts. “I hated leaving England,” Wyman reminisces. “You had to import Bird’s custard, Branston pickle and piccalilli… you had to buy PG Tips and then deal with the French milk.”

How Many Degrees of Seperation ?

Me – big fan of Spiritualized – ever since Mark M put me on to the in the days of Ladies and Gentlemen …

So imagine this that I have just found :

  • Harmony 1 (Mellotron)” – 0:24
  • “Sweet Talk” – 4:05
  • “Death Take Your Fiddle” – 3:14
  • “I Gotta Fire” – 2:28
  • “Soul on Fire” – 4:08
  • “Harmony 2 (Piano)” – 0:43
  • “Sitting on Fire” – 4:38
  • “Yeah Yeah” – 2:28
  • “You Lie You Cheat” – 3:04
  • “Harmony 3 (Voice)” – 0:18
  • “Baby I’m Just a Fool” – 7:07
  • “Don’t Hold Me Close” – 3:08
  • “Harmony 4 (The Old Man…)” – 1:33
  • “The Waves Crash In” – 4:08
  • “Harmony 5 (Accordion)” – 1:04
  • “Borrowed Your Gun” – 3:48
  • “Harmony 6 (Glockenspiel)” – 0:51
  • “Goodnight Goodnight” – 4:38This is the track listing for their Album A and EAccording to Wiki :

…. Jason was hesitant to finish the album, but a meeting with cult film director Harmony Korine inspired him to complete it. He also released a solo experimental record, Guitar Loops, and recorded the soundtrack to Korine’s 2008 film Mister Lonely, with the Sun City Girls. The six Harmony tracks on the album are named after the director.

Not only that – but the track ‘don’t hold me close’ is a duet with Harmony’s wife.

How do i know that – wiki of course. why did i look it up – i didn’t.

However, my friend Russ (American living in UK) posted this to his blog – where of course one Harmony Korine is mentioned.

Odd I thought – that’s the first track of Insurgentes. Wonder if there is a connection. There is. On the HK Wiki page :

“Harmony Korine” is the lead track on the solo album Insurgentes by Porcupine Tree lead singer Steven Wilson.”

But who is this Harmony Korine I ask myself ? Since I hadn’t connected the track to a real person before.

So started reading about him – and that’s where I discovered the really deep connection to Spiritualized.

I guess it is time for me to go see some of his movies.

So – when can I see his next one ? Turns out that his next film, ‘Trash Humpers’, has premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. [Wikipedia]

And so the connections continue – Trash Humping was also a term I did not know until the end of last week (note to self – get out more) – when I was listening to NPR – turns out – well – I’ll let you check it out -

Guess what – according to Wikipedia – Harmony Korine – the Insurgentes track by Wilson was NPR’s song of the day – March 4th 2009 ……

    Wheels within Wheels my friends.

Lasse works with The Tree, Blackfield, Opeth and The Pineaplle Thief – all very good in their own way ,,,, the lad obviously has an ear for good music !

Porcupine Tree Fans Snatch Up 'The Incident'

The Tree might be going main stream … really ?

Porcupine Tree Fans Snatch Up ‘The Incident’ | Billboard.com

Wilson believes that despite the “dumbing down” of culture by entertainment like reality TV, “there is definitely an equal and kind of opposite reaction against that by people who still want something with a little bit of emotional resonance, emotional depth . . . something they can immerse themselves in and kind of appreciate over many listens.”
