I wrote an email to a friend this morning who needed an introduction to Porcupine Tree. Thought I would share what I came up with. Be interested to see if there are any additions or modifications to the thinking.
FIRST READ THIS : http://www.kscopemusic.com/stevenwilson/insurgentes/ipod-destruction.html
Then – before you do anything – go to Signify – and play the first track ‘bornlivedie’ – and let it move through to Signify – the second track. Stop.Take a breath.
Hold that thought
Want a complete album to go through, that lets you in gently ? Try Lightbulb Sun
Want a couple of other songs on the lighter more lyrical side ?
- piano lessons on stupid dream
- disappear on 4 chords
- collapse the light into the earth on in abstentia
- lazarus on deadwing
Want something more ‘in your face’
- harmony korine on insurgence is there – without going into black metal
- blackest eyes on in abstentia
- strip the soul on in abstentia
- shallow on deadwing – one of their few forays into releasing singles
You get the drift – a superb range of styles, eclectic, engaging, complete.
